NSPF® Scholarship Program
Application Instructions

The National Swimming Pool Foundation is a non-profit foundation whose mission is to encourage healthier living through aquatic education and research. The NSPF Scholarship Program was founded to honor public swimming pool or spa operators who have pursued further education to better protect public health by achieving the NSPF Certified Pool/Spa Operator® certification status.

Several scholarship awards are available. Recipients of specific awards will be determined by NSPF after reviewing all applications.

  • National Swimming Pool Foundation Ray B. Essick Scholarship Award (1) — $2,000
  • National Swimming Pool Foundation Board of Directors’ Scholarship Award (1) — $2,000
  • National Swimming Pool Foundation Scholarship Award (8) — $1,000

To be considered for any of the available scholarships, the applicant must be an ACTIVE Certified Pool/Spa Operator®, Certified Pool-Spa Operator® Instructor, or the immediate family member of an active CPO® or CPO® Instructor and submit a completed application package. Only one scholarship per applicant will be awarded. Previous award recipients are ineligible for consideration.

Deadline:
Scholarships are awarded for the fall semester of each year. In order to be considered for the fall 2010 semester, the complete application package must be received by the National Swimming Pool Foundation no later than June 1, 2010.

Award Notification:
Award recipients will be notified on or before August 1, 2010. Upon award, payment will be submitted directly to the college or university. Awards cannot be paid directly to students.

Package Requirements

Consideration will not be given to incomplete application packages.
  1. A completed NSPF Scholarship Program Application.
  2. A biographical sketch of the applicant (less than 300 words).
  3. A complete resumé or vitae of the applicant, including extracurricular activities, awards, etc.
  4. 2” x 3” photograph of the applicant.
  5. An essay of no more than five (5) double-spaced, 12 pt. font, typed pages covering the topic shown below.

    Compare and contrast the benefits and risks of both hot and cold water immersion to humans. Your answer should include mechanisms for mitigating/preventing potential problems.

    A minimum of three references from a peer-reviewed journal are required along with citations following the Modern Language Association (MLA) format. Peer-reviewed or scholarly journals can be found online through most public and college libraries. Most high school, college libraries, and public libraries have access to databases that contain these sources. These journals help ensure the information is credible as well as accurate. Please consult your librarian for access to these areas if you need assistance.

    Examples of MLA format are as follows:

    • Book: Author. Title of Book, City of Publication, Publisher, Year.
    • Encyclopedia or Reference Books: Author of Article (if given), "Article Title," Title of Book, City of Publication, Publisher, Year.
    • Journal: Author, "Title of Article," Title of Journal, Date, Page(s).
  6. Official academic transcript(s) from current academic institution and previous academic transcripts if
    applicant has been enrolled for less than two years.
  7. For high school seniors or recent graduates, a copy of the applicant’s most recent SAT or ACT scores.
  8. Two letters of recommendation from teachers or college professors on university letterhead..
